Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass is comic book action and violence that probably reads better than it works on the big screen. I can see the appeal for this movie in the 13-18 guy set and fans of the comic book. Being neither, I could only watch the movie and take it for what it is. The trailer would have you believe that it's cute kids dressing up as super heros and kicking the ass of bullys. Not even close. This is a geek guy movie with teenage lust, comics, really rich bad guys who are stupid enough to be beaten by a few people in costume, one being 11 years old. Improbable and silly, the movie is okay but fun enough in parts that it will generate a fan base.

Our teen geek, Dave, is on a quest to not be bullied. Hey Dave, if you get robbed in the same parking lot each week, stop going in that parking lot. Throw out logic and go with the ride and eventually the wanna-be super heroes will have intersecting paths.

A lot is going on. Dave's hero scuba suit leads him to getting his ass kicked and the high school thinking he's gay. Love interest girl decides a gay BFF is perfect for her so Dave goes along. As Dave decides to kick ass of love interest's stalker, Dave meets Batman and Hit Girl, the father/daughter vengeance duo. That's a relief because at some point we needed to learn the motivation behind this family hit team. Nicholas Cage plays the dad and he is enjoyable and the actress that plays is daughter is the only true ass-kicker in the movie.  Add in a rich bad guy and his neglected geek son and you can then mix and match any other movie to come up with the action sequences here. We've seen it all somewhere.

What I liked - almost everything happens for a reason and comes into play later on. The way the people cross paths, the weapons, the relationships mostly work. The weapons and cars are cool.

Not so much - product placement will date this movie. The references to MySpace, Skype, iPhone, etc might be laughable in a few years. The way one kid can kill dozens of professional bad guys and not one of them shoots her in the head.  The way so many other movies came into my head (that are so much better) while I watched Kick-Ass.

I loved - the Bazooka.  I'm waiting - for May and Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood for some real Kick-Ass!
