Kuwait Times - news you can't get anywhere else

Page 5. "Cambodian 'half-animal girl' hospitalized" Turns out that some girl got lost when she was a herding buffalo as a small child in 1989. Was found recently living like a monkey. She was hospitalized but the family took her home. She can't speak or interact with people after living on her own for so long. She wants to escape and run back to the jungle. Very sad.

Page 1. Well the giant rubber band ball in Florida is famous in Kuwait too.

Page 2. "Indonesia maid ban an 'insult' to Kuwait" Ban tarnishes the country's image.

A bit of back history here. The Philippines banned maids working in Kuwait a couple years ago due to the high domestic abuse of violence and rape, which led to an unusual amount of suicide attempts. I have never seen a maid or a nanny smile or look anything less than completely miserable here in Kuwait. Ever. They are treated for the most part like crap by both employer and the children they care for. It should be no insult but wake-up call instead.

Page 3. "Women's committee formed, sets strategy" By Nawara Fattahova. Excerpts follow:
"Women in Kuwait have been pressed and prevented from enjoying the same rights extended to men. After campaigning, speaking, protesting for many years, they won the right to vote, and a couple of years after that the right to stand for parliament."

This is important because the more women in Kuwait gain rights, the increased pressure from the Islamic party comes to ban women's rights. Last year a law was passed that women could not work from 10pm to 7am because women might not be protected during these hours. (hospital workers excepted). No one could define why a women was not capable of working nights but a year later, the law stands. Women cannot travel without permission of their husband or father. This is in process of getting repealed but as soon as it happens, it's almost certain a new law or religious edict will be passed to make this a crime.

I'll leave you with the police report:

A flasher was arrested after the two women he flashed were unimpressed with his package. He drove off, the women noted his license plate, and the police are looking for the flasher.

120 bottles of home-produced hooch were confiscated and the seller was arrested.

2 drug busts.

And finally "a spoilt boy (17) apparently regularly turns the school parking lot into his own personal race track." Police and traffic officers are not stopping him even after repeated requests from the school administration."

Reason unknown. Maybe because he's Kuwaiti? his father is rich? they don't care?

You can't make this stuff up!
