Maui Trip Report 2

The snorkeling day arrived at last without any rain delays. We had to be at the harbor at 6:15 sharp, so that meant a 5:00 am wake-up call. To get ready, we prepared the night before with beach towels, water cameras, sunscreen, and umbrella into a nice big Hilo Hatties bag. We set out our water shoes and change of clothing and decided that we were as prepared as possible.

The next morning the alarm went off at 5:00 am and at 5:10, we were both in bathing suits and heavy coat jackets, ready to go. It was still cold and windy so we needed the jackets. Jean and I looked at each other and decided it was time to go. At 6:00 am, we arrived at the harbor and realized that neither of us had grabbed the Hilo Hatties bag! There we were with bathing suits and hiking jackets but no beach towels or sunscreen! We had a few minutes to spare so we did a detour to Circle K and bought sunscreen and a new camera and returned to the dock still minus towels. It was now 6:18 and we were late and the last to arrive. In a matter of 3 minutes, we were holding up the boat and we were the disorganized duo to boot!

No matter, they crew fed us and we were off. At 7:30 am the boat moored at Molokini Island and even though we were still wearing jackets, the captain convinced us to go in the water. It turned out to be one of the coolest snorkeling areas ever, with exceptionally clear water and more varieties of fish than I have ever seen outside of a tank. I even saw a puffer fish and an eel, along with all the other brightly colored fish that I refer to as...fish.

Back on the boat we drip dried and hoped for sun. It didn't arrive. We sat and shivered and watched with envy as other people dried themselves off with their beach towels. The next stop was Turtle Town and this was even better because we were swimming around with the giant green sea turtles! After that it was more drip dry on the boat but we were distracted by the fresh bbq feast the crew had prepared for us. The sun didn't come out but it did get warmer and as we sailed back there were whales all around us. We even got close to a baby whale and it's mother, until mom warned us off and the boat turned around. No use getting dumped into the ocean by an angry humpback whale.

Once back on shore we found out that the luau was on for the night and we would be able to go. There was enough time to drive back to the condo and get cleaned up and go back to Lahaina for the Old Lahaina Luau. This was one of the better luaus I've been to. You don't have to deal with silly people getting pulled from the audience against their will to do the hula. It was more of the history of the hula throughout the years. The food was good (excellent banana bread) and the drinks were plentiful.

All in all, Thursday was a good day.
