Every once in a while, all SF fans need to get together and have a geek fest before returning to work on Monday. It usually takes place in the form of a science fiction convention and Con-Dor has been running in San Diego all weekend. While it's a small con, it provides the fan activities needed to keep your geekcard. This year though, Con-Dor was unable to provide the film room where I generally hang out, so Robot Builder decided to have the film party at his house.

There were 6 of us gathered for a day of film and geek talk. We could each find a reason in our minds why each one of us either was or was not the biggest geek there. We all had our claim to fame. I think that even though I've been on 6 Star Trek cruises (#7 is this year) and I was on a Star Trek cruise Canadian special, I am not the biggest geek. After all, Mrs. Robot Builder is a Master Costumer and her husband a Robot Builder. "Who has more than one robot in there house?" was the qualifying question of the day. Mr. Star Wars Society was busy taking notes on Imperial Costuming while Robot Builder was taking notes on 3PO's backside. Mr. Y. is one of the head geeks at Comic-Con and Mr. T. is the Renassaince Geek. He does a bit of it all.

So that was the set-up for the day. I only was there for 2 of the movies and of course they were both great! First up for me was "Phantom of the Paradise" a Brian De Palma flick from 1974. It combines the classic phantom story with rock music and stars Paul Williams.

The IMDb tagline is: He's been maimed and framed, beaten, robbed and mutilated. But they still can't keep him from the woman he loves.
That tells you nothing but the plot outline is more revealing:
A disfigured musician sells his soul for the woman he loves so that she will perform his music.
5 of us love the movie, Mrs. Robot Builder wants those hours of her life back. It's classic De Palma and you'll either love it or hate it. There's no inbetween. A couple of beers help.

We took a break for the bbq and then it was on to the film print of Star Wars. No special edition, no VHS, no laser disc or DVD, we had the real thing in all it's untouched glory! It was so refreshing to just watch Star Wars and not be sidetracked by extra CG or PC scenes. Han shoots first! The story holds up if you pretend that there's no prequels and then you have to read so much more into each scene. It's all good in the end and Star Wars is still my favorite movie/trilogy of all time.

It's Sunday morning and I still have my Con-Dor membership waiting for me in San Diego but I don't have the need to go there this year. Comic-Con and Star Trek cruise #7 are just a few months away so I'm good to go until then!
