Surrogates

"It could have been better." That was the consensus last night after watching Bruce Willis save the planet in Surrogates. The newest entry in the genre of 'beware technology', Surrogates shows us how awful the world will be if we all are plugged in and living life through a console. Robots now double as the outside face so only perfect looking faces and bodies are considered socially acceptable. The real life people are fat, unhealthy, and living in pajamas in their homes with shades drawn shut. Sounds pretty good to me!

The premise is that robot selves are bad, but so are the rogue humans who refuse to have anything to do with robots and live in human only reservations. I don't know why all these rogue humans look like they came from the swamps and want to lynch everyone but they do. Against these odds, I'll take the robots.

Bruce Willis misses his wife (side story over drama of losing only child) and wants to see her, not her robot self. Caught up in the drama of a plot to destroy humans via zapping the eyes of their robot surrogates, Bruce must make his choice and decide how to save humanity.

Does anyone get to the second half of the movie with a question mark over their head on his choice? I think not.

What I liked: Yes, I did like some stuff. I thought an effort was made on the part of the actors and the animators to show the subtle differences between a human and a surrogate. From eye movements, to walking, to hair, an effort was made. The idea was good but really fell by the wayside during the course of the movie.

Not so much: Plot inconsistencies, loopholes, a general lack of caring what happened to the people.

Overall a forgettable experience.
