I think I might be inclined to like Merida if I had seen more of it than my hotel, the two main streets, and downtown. Yesterday was a series of training, restaurant visits, potential restaurant site visits, and back to the hotel. I know the beach is nearby because I can see the ocean way off on the horizon. Maybe I'll get a glimpse of it from the airplane later today. No pictures and nothing of interest to report. Today's a travel day from Merida to Veracruz. You'd think you could fly non-stop but no, it has to be hard. We have to go to Mexico City to change planes to get to Veracruz. It's like flying from Denver to Phoenix via Los Angeles.

Innsbruck - here despite it never being on my to-see list
First the backstory. In about a week I'll be boarding a cruise ship (this year's Cruise Trek) in Romania. When I booked the flight many months ago, I had a brilliant idea to go in a week early to Vienna and use it as a base to spend a few nights each in Albania and Bosnia. Fast forward to 6 weeks ago and the Covid restrictions, flight schedules, and hotel prices made me give up. Changing the flight to Vienna would result in penalties and possibly fare increases so I made the best of it and thought, where can I go in Austria where I've never been? Innsbruck, hmm. Can I get a free flight from Vienna? Yes! Can I get a free hotel room? Yes. Check! The city is picture perfect though. Nestled in a valley between two mountain ranges, it's green, colorful, and everything you could want a place to be when the purpose is total work decompression. No major sightseeing, no expectations. You, a city and a view. It's walkable and small. You've got to look up, left and right,
Stained Glass - Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro
Yesterday's tour included a quick stop to run inside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro and take photos of the stained glass. Glass looks best when it is sunny outside and we had sun in abundance! I need to find a camera setting that works with cathedrals. Stained glass is one of the more difficult things to photograph well.
Merida looks very green - almost tropical. Quite a contrast between the bright white buildings and green trees.
