Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Invoking the Jedi rule (support all movies that Ewan McGregor is in) Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was the wild card movie for the weekend. The story revolves around a rich Sheikh who has built a dam in Yemen with the intent to create a river and introduce the sport of salmon fishing to the country of Yemen. This brings in Ewan McGregor as a resident UK fish expert who has a lackluster marriage and Emily Blunt as the project manager who has recently found love. The two are destined to meet on the salmon project and we watch their relationships through the helpful salmon metaphors.

The general story would be entertaining but the sub-plot of angry Yemeni's who want to stop the project and the British Prime Minister's need for good publicity drag Yemen down. Both were taken a bit to unbelievable extremes which made the movie a bit improbable even if you were willing to go along with the premise. I liked parts of the movie. Ewan McGregor was good as the fishery expert who talked to fish to work out his problems, and the email, text messages, and internal thoughts of the characters were funny. Love happens, fish happen, love fails, fish fail, and hope returns.

There are worse movies out right now. (Wrath of the Titans, I'm looking at you) If you have heard of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and were thinking about going, it's under two hours, won't scar you for life and some nice little bits.
