The gopher made an appearance yesterday morning. I couldn't believe it! He was right there in plain sight scouting out the fenceline. As soon as he saw me he darted back under the fence. Now I know why the cat has her favorite spot by the fence. On the other side is the main entry to the gopher's home. One mystery solved. I promptly buried that entrance in cat litter and mothballs. Neither cat nor gopher have been sighted today. I might have to buy stock in the mothball industry though if this keeps up.
