Shrek 3
Shrek 3 is an easily the least interesting of the Shrek movies to date. This isn't to say it's all bad, but this isn't the witty, solid movie that made the previous incarnations a fun favorite. This time around, Fiona's frog dad is dying and Prince Charming is still seeking to become King. Shrek is named King to be but is desperate to find a back-up and goes off in search of Arthur, who is somehow distantly the only second choice for King. What should be the usual charming misadventure takes a dark twist for the first 45 minutes as the movie focuses on death, revenge, and depressed fairy tale characters. There's little to laugh about.
Once the halfway point is crossed, the movie has some life. There are really 3 storylines in process, Shrek's, Fiona's, and Prince Charmings. This movie seems to center around Fiona as the strong princess and there are entertaining moments where she has to cope with Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, and Sleeping Beauty. This was the most amusing part of Shrek 3, and Donkey, Puss, and Shrek were sidelined at times.
Most of the children in the audience were 6 year old girls. The children, who had been silent for the first 45 minutes, finally started laughing in the second half of the movie. The only thing that saved it for them were the princesses. Some of the other adventures were too over their heads to get the humor and the story didn't work at all levels.
The Gingerbread Man makes me laugh and he had the best "life flash before your eyes" scene of the movie. When I have to watch this over and over on an airplane in 6 months, I'll be grateful for the laugh courtesy of the Gingerbread Man.
Shrek 3 is only 91 minutes and that was plenty. It was better to have the first half boring and the second half decent, if only to leave on a semi-positive note. For most of the movie I found myself reviewing my shopping list. There's a set-up for Shrek 4. I'm sure the studio will make it, don't think I'll go. I'll save that spoiler for you to find out on your own.
