Winter has come to Carlsbad. Last night the storm moved in and I spent most of the night wondering if the big tree was going to fall down. That would have been a bummer because if that tree goes, it will probably take down my new fence. Luckily the tree stayed intact and most of the damage this morning is flooding. It's even 41 F. outside and I've broken down and turned on the heater to warm the house up. Ms. Kitty and LJ are coming over today to scrapbook and I don't want to turn them into icicles!
I also woke up this morning still disliking the movie Kinsey. The quick history is Dr. Alfred Kinsey published the first sex survey that we now see in present day form in every issue of Cosmopoliton magazine. Kinsey was the person who made it possible for there to be a Dr. Ruth or a Dr. Drew, two far more entertaining people to watch. Kinsey on all accounts was not a personable guy and the movie does hint at this and show it to some extent but the kind side of Kinsey is also presented to make him more sypathetic to the audience. As far as Liam Neeson's portrayal of Kinsey I found him interesting to watch but Mondo felt he was miscast as the lead. Laura Linney played Mrs. Kinsey, who is probably a more interesting person and Linney's acting outshone the movie. John Lithgow did a great job as Kinsey's controlling father and then there was a great but underutilized supporting cast of Timothy Hutton, Tim Curry, Chris O'Donnell, and Oliver Platt.
Ultimately the movie was good from a historical perspective but rather bogged down in details about the sex lives of insects and loose storylines that were never resolved. There was no wrap up screen roll at the end to tell us what happened to this group of people later in their lives. Kinsey has a rating of R and it's a hard R for classroom type sexual discussions, graphic images, nudity, and Liam Neeson making out with male co-star Peter Sarsgarrd. Well the make-out scene was one of the more entertaining moments of the movie but most of the time I was just distracted by all the background effect of the too perfect kitchen, product placement, and where did they get all of those extras? I was glad when the movie ended and in a few weeks I'll have trouble remembering the details of the Kinsey.
If you think you'd like to check it out anyway, Kinsey is playing in limited release in LA and NYC and will slowly open on more screens in the next few weeks. After 2 hours, 9 minutes of this movie, I'm ready for the SpongeBob movie! Today's link will take you to the Rotten Tomatoes review page of Kinsey in case you'd like some positive viewpoints of the movie.

I thought the bug collecting was the most interesting part of the movie except for P. Sarsgaard's yummy full frontal and backal nudity: an actor whose face I wouldn't be able to pick out of a line up.
