The week officially ended with a stop at the store for cereal. Standing in the check-out it hit me how much we all look like zombies. Everyone at the store had the same dazed, vacant, and slightly off kilter look as if we had all come back from the beach and had forgotten the marshmallows. For the first time this week, there are pockets of blue sky over Carlsbad. Not to east or over the ocean but if I look straight up, there is blue. Tonight I can even open the windows. It's a moment of respite from the nagging knowledge that the fires are still burning and any sudden change in the wind could stir things up once again. Maybe by Monday when people get to go home it will feel better. We'll find out then.

Innsbruck - here despite it never being on my to-see list
First the backstory. In about a week I'll be boarding a cruise ship (this year's Cruise Trek) in Romania. When I booked the flight many months ago, I had a brilliant idea to go in a week early to Vienna and use it as a base to spend a few nights each in Albania and Bosnia. Fast forward to 6 weeks ago and the Covid restrictions, flight schedules, and hotel prices made me give up. Changing the flight to Vienna would result in penalties and possibly fare increases so I made the best of it and thought, where can I go in Austria where I've never been? Innsbruck, hmm. Can I get a free flight from Vienna? Yes! Can I get a free hotel room? Yes. Check! The city is picture perfect though. Nestled in a valley between two mountain ranges, it's green, colorful, and everything you could want a place to be when the purpose is total work decompression. No major sightseeing, no expectations. You, a city and a view. It's walkable and small. You've got to look up, left and right,
Stained Glass - Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro
Yesterday's tour included a quick stop to run inside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro and take photos of the stained glass. Glass looks best when it is sunny outside and we had sun in abundance! I need to find a camera setting that works with cathedrals. Stained glass is one of the more difficult things to photograph well.
Karen,
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you and your brothers are ok. We were unscathed, as well, here in our area east of El Cajon. What a week...
